Landfill Information

Landfill regulations.

Operation; purpose; prohibited materials:  The city operates a landfill for the purpose of disposing of garbage and trash by the city, by commercial contractors, and by others authorized by the sanitation department. No toxic materials, hazardous or infectious waste or free liquids will be disposed of in any landfill or in any refuse or recycling container owned or operated by or within the city.

Charges:  The basic charge for disposal of solid waste at the city landfill will be as follows:

Commercial, per ton . . . $20.00

Tires (shredded only), per ton . . . 20.00

State, county and other municipalities, per ton . . . 20.00

Minimum residential for resident outside city limits, per ton . . . 5.00

Volume will be determined by landfill attendant. All fees must be paid prior to dumping. Customers who handle large volumes on a continuing basis may establish charge accounts if approved by the sanitation department.

(1)   Loads which require special handling and preparation such as dead animals, loads of wire, etc., will pay twenty dollars ($20.00) per yard, with a minimum fee of twenty dollars ($20.00) in addition to tipping fees. The determination of whether a load requires special handling and preparation shall be in the sole discretion of the landfill attendant.

(2)   To offset the high cost of removing litter from roadsides, any vehicle which arrives at the landfill with open loads of loose solid waste which is not covered in such a way as to prevent loss of litter will be charged a fee equal to twice what would normally be charged. In addition, repeat offenders will be reported to law enforcement agencies for violation of state traffic regulations.

(3)   Waste will not be accepted outside Pike County.

Abiding by rules:  All citizens entering city landfill property are required to follow instructions and abide by landfill policy. Scavenging is strictly prohibited. Loads will be dumped only where directed by landfill attendants. Children under sixteen (16) years of age must remain inside the vehicle while on landfill property.
