Johnny represents Council District Four and serves as President of the Troy City Council. A Troy native, he is married to the former Barbara Jo Pritchett of Union Springs, Alabama. He and Barbara have two children, Ashley (Jeff) Tate and John (Ivy) Witherington, Jr. They have five grandchildren: Luke, Seth, and Joel Tate, and John (Jack) H. Witherington, III and Laura Ashley Witherington.

John is a product of the Troy City School System and Troy University. He is the president and owner of The Witherington Insurance Group, a local insurance and bond business. Johnny was first elected to municipal government in 1984, and held the last seat on the former Troy City Commission. He was re-elected in 1985 to the Troy City Council when the form of government was changed and has served consecutive terms of office since then.

He is actively involved in the community. He has served as past president of the Troy Rotary Club and a Paul Harris Fellow; past president of the Troy Exchange Club; past president of the Southeast Alabama Gas District Board of Directors; a member of the Alabama Independent Insurance Agents Association; the Pike County Chamber of Commerce; a charter member of the board of directors of the Troy City School Education Foundation;and is a deacon and Sunday School teacher at Southside Baptist Church. In his leisure time, Johnny enjoys time with his family, turkey/deer hunting, and farming.
