Mayor's
Litter Tips of the Week
Mayor
Jimmy Lunsford’s Litter Tips of the Week have
appeared in the Troy Messenger and have been played
on WTBF radio of Troy.
Litter
Tip of the Week
Clean communities have a better chance of attracting
new businesses than those where litter is common. Please
concentrate on keeping your homes, apartments, businesses,
and neighborhoods clean by sweeping porches, front walkways,
alleys, and picking up trash and debris.
Litter
Tip of the Week
Household garbage is one of our main sources of
litter, when you leave your trash out by the road, please
make sure it is tied in a bundle and the lid of your
trash can is closed securely. Section 11-46 of our city’s
Code of Ordinances states that any person in charge
of any premises should not allow an accumulation of
garbage, trash, or litter in the vicinity of any trash
container serving such premises. Please set a good example
to your neighbors in your neighborhood. If all of our
neighborhoods follow these simple rules, we can reduce
the amount of litter in Troy tremendously.
Litter
Tip of the Week
A major source of litter in Troy originates from
our business owners. Business owners should frequently
check their dumpsters and make sure dumpster lids are
closed and loading docks are clean. Also, owners should
consistently monitor the area around their business
making sure it is clean and well kept. This will not
only make our city’s appearance more beautiful,
it will attract more customers to your businesses.
Litter
Tip of the Week
City workers, construction workers, or anyone in
the city of Troy that constantly carries supplies in
their trucks should always make sure that all loose
materials are completely covered. Truck drivers are
constantly loosing trash out of the backs of their trucks
and are not aware that they are causing a large amount
of litter on our roads and highways. Section 11-42 of
our city’s Code of Ordinances states that it is
unlawful for any person to operate any vehicle on the
public streets that will spill waste upon the public
streets. Please take a minute every day and check your
vehicles for these loose materials and this will decrease
litter on our roads tremendously.
Litter
Tip of the Week
Business owners should realize that litter especially
affects them. Litter reduces property values and deprives
local businesses revenue when their dollars are spent
to clean parking lots and the area around businesses.
This will eventually affect the members of our community
by increasing the cost of goods we buy every day.
Litter
Tip of the Week
Many smokers do not believe that throwing their
cigarette butts out of the window has a very negative
environmental impact, nor do they consider it littering.
Not only does cigarette litter look terrible on our
roads and highways, littered cigarette filters contain
toxic chemicals that leak into the air and water and
they can take decades to degrade, littered butts also
cause numerous fires every year. Some smokers are completely
unaware of the problems they are causing, if you know
someone who is guilty of flicking their butts out of
the window, please educate them on the negative affects
they are causing.
Litter
Tip of the Week
Littering presents a threat to our wildlife. Next
time you flick a cigarette butt out of your window or
throw out a piece of plastic, consider this…
Cigarette filters have been found in the stomachs of
fish, birds, whales and other marine creatures who mistake
them for food. Birds are trapped in plastic six pack
holders and are unable to escape. Please be considerate
and protective of our wildlife.
Litter
Tip of the Week
One main source of litter is coming from the posting
of handbills, signs, notices, and advertisements. When
patrons distribute these materials, they are blowing
off of cars, buildings and doors and landing in our
streets. Section 11-47 in our city’s Code of Ordinances
states that No person whether or not a licensed bill
poster, shall paste any thing of this sort within the
limits unless the person is legally in possession or
has the owner’s consent. Please obey this law
and keep these unnecessary eye sores off of our streets.
Education
is an essential component in litter prevention, and
is needed to motivate the citizens of our community
to make Troy a litter-free environment. With my litter
tips of the week, I hope the members of our community
are becoming more educated and aware of litter and its
many negative effects on our city. Please continue to
read them and help me in my fight for a community that
is free of litter.
Litter
tip of the Week
Did you know that if you throw a paper bag out of
your window, it takes one month to decompose? Place
a litter bag in your vehicle, if you would like a “City
of Troy” litter bag, please come by and pick one
up at City Hall. With a bag in your vehicle, you can
accumulate your litter in the bag until you can find
a trash can.
Litter
tip of the Week
Research shows that people litter if they do not
feel any personal "ownership" in, or responsibility
for, areas in the community we all share, like streets,
parks, sidewalks, etc. Please realize that this is your
home and take pride in your community by not littering.
Litter
tip of the Week
People litter when they believe someone else will
pick up after them. This is particularly true when individuals
are not aware of the fact that the cost of this kind
of maintenance is eventually passed on to them in one
way or another. So, please concentrate on keeping Troy
litter free.
